How To Start a Ghostbike Project

Map_locations

Starting a Ghostbike project in your area is rather easy. We suggest taking the following steps:

  • Gather a team.
  • Identify locations where cyclists have been killed. Start a log of the time, place, person and other details.
  • Obtain old bicycles, paint entire bike white.
  • Create signs to let people know why the bike is there. Pieces of plywood make good signage and creating a stencil so you can spray the info on makes it easier to create many signs. Also keep in mind how you are going to attach the sign to the bike.
  • Obtain devices to lock bikes with. Lengths of metal cable with couplers is a fairly affordable way to lock the bikes.
  • Identify exact bike placement location. Keep in mind that memorials may not be technically legal, and that local authorities often overlook them if they are not presenting a problem since this kind of enforcement is usually complaint-driven. Try not to block things and keep in mind where the fire hydrants are located.
  • Place bikes, preferably using bikes w/trailers and the cover of darkness.
  • Take photo.
  • Contact Ghostbike.org to setup a project for you.
  • Enter your bikes in Ghostbike.org
